An inlet with a Castro past
The beach of Playa de Carniciega / Carriciega, also known as Playa de Barquera, is accessed from the west of the beach of Verdicio, at low tide, although it can also be reached via paths along the gentle cliffs that surround it.
It is a quiet golden sandy area of about three hundred metres that is also called Barquera beach, most probably because it was used as a fishing port in ancient times. Opposite the beach is the castro de los Garabetales, some 200 metres away, which is just one more representative of the castreño culture of this area.
It forms part of the Cabo Peñas Protected Landscape.

Ordinance for pets on the beach:
- The access and presence of any type of animal, including domestic animals, is prohibited on the beaches, waters and bathing areas, as well as on the promenades, with the exception of those that are necessary for the development of activities duly authorised by the competent health authority.
- In the case of abandoned animals wandering on the beach, their owners shall be responsible for them. The owner of an animal, without prejudice to the subsidiary responsibility of the owner, will be responsible for any damage and harm caused to people, installations and facilities in general.
