Giant Squid Centre

The new museum space allows you to immerse yourself in the seabed and discover the life and habitat of the world’s largest cephalopods, as well as that of their prey and predators, with whom they coexist in the depths of the Cantabrian Sea.

A fascinating and little-known ecosystem – that of the Kraken – which is sure to leave a lasting impression. You’ll discover up to 10 specimens of these mythological creatures, accompanied by dozens of cephalopods and skeletal remains of various cetaceans that are abundant in these waters.

Although cephalopods are the museum’s undisputed stars, in this exhibition you’ll also be able to observe other intriguing recovered marine species.

This museum space will recreate a mysterious atmosphere, achieved by using only the strictly necessary lighting, along with ambient sound reminiscent of the flow of water and the movements of giant squid, which stir a passion for discovery – a clear tribute to the Avilés-born Nobel Laureate, Severo Ochoa.

The aim is to simulate a dive into the depths of the Avilés Trench through a sensory experience designed to reveal the habitat, legends and characteristics of a mysterious species yet to be fully understood. It will also feature various interactive elements.

The museum tour will be circular and designed primarily for families.
