Wealth is what the fertile plains of the great rivers produce, and the Nalón is no less so here. We start out near one of the largest kiwi plantations in Asturias, in the most fertile area of the valley.
The floods of the river leave a quantity of sediments at this height that fertilise the land and produce a wealth of fertility in the soil. The route runs alongside the river, which reveals the life provided by its exuberance and diversity, both animal and plant.
During the warmer months, dragonflies and damselflies can be seen resting in the leaves of the alders. Blackbirds and kingfishers frequently accompany us on the route, as well as the everlasting white wagtails, always moving from stone to stone at the river's edge.
The culmination of the route is to enjoy the church of Santianes, a jewel of the Asturian Pre-Romanesque that we cannot miss.
Route
Pravia - Santianes 4,7
This route starts at Polígono de Salcedo, in Pravia. There we will find the signpost and enough space to leave the vehicle. It runs along the banks of the River Nalón, the largest river in Asturias, until it reaches Santianes.
The first 600 metres run between the industrial estate warehouses. At this point there is a direct access to the river Nalón. After the first kilometre and a half, we cross the river Aranguín over a small bridge and gradually leave the industrial estate and its warehouses behind us. This path is surrounded by farmland and numerous riverside vegetation.
Once we reach kilometre 3.5, we turn left and come to the Vega de Santianes. We continue along our path without turning off at any of the crossroads that appear, to reach Santianes. One kilometre later, we are already in Santianes, the end of the route. But we cannot leave the village without first seeing the beautiful pre-Romanesque church of San Juan Evangelista, one of the monuments of the Asturian pre-Romanesque period.
