- Documents Documents: Arnao Mine Museum Brochure
Arnaú, its mining landscape and its zinc factory were pioneers in Spain in several aspects. Its coal mine will be the first coal deposit located under the seabed, which at that time had a novel exploitation system, becoming the first Asturian experience with a vertical extraction shaft and with a spectacular derrick that is today one of the most striking elements of the current museum. Likewise, its zinc factory will turn Asturias and the region of Avilés into a world reference for this metal.
The pioneering spirit of the Real Compañía Asturiana de Minas went beyond the strictly technical and industrial, and in fact sought a model of life and society, and all of this is faithfully reflected in the old schools of the town and in the entire urban environment of the area, whose heritage bears witness to a company project and a culture that is now history.
