The Collegiate Church of Santa María la Real de Tanes is located on the edge of the Tanes dam and is made up of a nucleus, the main nave and several additions that form a curious ensemble of unusual proportions in Asturian churches.
The central body is made up of the rectangular nave and straight chancel, which is higher than the rest of the rooms. Inside, the nave is divided into three bays by pilasters with attached columns and transverse arches. It is covered with a ribbed vault.
The chancel leads from the presbytery to a small sacristy covered with ribbed vaulting. At the foot of the nave there is a wooden choir supported by a triple stone arcade. To the left of the nave is the Chapel of the Nazarene, the oldest building in the complex. This chapel is a square-shaped enclosure covered with a barrel vault.
The western and southern façades are protected by a portico, closed at the front and open with arches on the southern side.
The portico leads to a square enclosure that served as a school and the master's living quarters.
In the southwest corner of the façade is the new sacristy. It is a rectangular enclosure with an independent façade.
