In this Museum, visitors can see and learn about the history of this historic Sanctuary from the legendary battle with which the Reconquest began, initiated by Don Pelayo (Founder of the Monarchy), as well as the different transformations it has undergone throughout its history.
Of enormous value are the crown of the Virgin of Covadonga and the Child, created by the Oviedo jeweller Félix Granda Buylla in 1918, the year of the canonical coronation of the Virgin. They are made of platinum, gold, diamonds, rubies, sapphires, French roses, diamonds and pearls. These pieces are only used on the day of Covadonga, 8 September.
Of Mannerist style is the 16th century ivory Christ, which belonged to San Francisco de Paula, and later to King Philip II, who donated it to the Sanctuary of Covadonga.
The Museum of Covadonga also houses reproductions of the drawings made by the architect Ventura Rodríguez for the Basilica project. An impressive painting of King Pelayo by the painter Madrazo is on display. There are also numerous works of goldsmithery and liturgical clothing, such as the pectoral of San Melchor de Quirós and the embroidered white silk mantle and dress, donated to the Virgin of Covadonga by Queen Isabel II.
