After several years of forced closure of the Cueva de la Peña to allow the recovery of the prehistoric paintings, it can now be visited by a small number of people for a short period of time each year, so that the demand exceeds the scarce supply of visitors. For this reason, the Interpretation Centre helps to alleviate many of these desires that cannot be satisfied.
The centre shows, by means of volumetric representations to scale, the main sets of Palaeolithic paintings and engravings existing in the Cueva de la Peña and is aimed at a better understanding, knowledge and dissemination of Asturian Palaeolithic art and specifically of the Cueva de la Peña.
The Valdés-Bazán Palace is a noble mansion, built at the beginning of the 17th century, in the town of San Román. It has various spaces dedicated to the activities carried out in the council, such as: public library, conference room, computer rooms and multi-purpose rooms (craft workshops, etc.).
It also houses a temporary exhibition hall and two classrooms dedicated to the Cueva de la Peña. This cave is located in the town of San Román. Access is restricted to 25 people per day, during the months of July, August and the first fortnight of September, by prior reservation at Candamo Town Hall.
The cave preserves paintings and engravings made during the Solutrense and Magdalenian periods (18000-13000 BC).
