In the village square, opposite the Cistercian monastery and a slate granary, our route begins, which will take us through valleys and forests in high areas or across the river. We will enjoy the most varied landscape with a mixture of ethnography to explain life in the area and also the landscape itself.
The valley shaped by the river has a fertile lower area where the forge and the Ecomuseum of Bread are located, and slopes dotted with mixed woodland and heathland bushes that give them colour.
We can breathe easy walking through these woods when we see the lichens hanging from the trees, indicating the purity of the air that enters our lungs. A perfect way to get to know part of the council of Villanueva de Oscos.
Vilanova/Villanueva de Oscos 8
The route starts in the village of Vilanova/Villanueva de Oscos, capital of the council, from where we set off in the direction of Santa Eufemia along a path parallel to the AS-33 road. After 700 metres, we come to our first crossroads, where we follow the left-hand branch.
During the first kilometre of the route, the path joins the AS-33 road, along which we continue for a few metres. Some 200 metres further on, we reach Santa Eufemia, where there is a beautiful baroque chapel built between the 17th and 18th centuries.
After 1.400 kilometres, we come to another crossroads, where we see the VO-2 road on our right; we continue straight on and, a few metres further on, we leave the AS-33 road and, after crossing the Casteñeira bridge, turn right.
At kilometre 2 of the route, we find a forest of birch trees next to the abandoned farmhouse of Abilleira. After 400 metres we come to a crossroads; if we were to turn right, it would take us along a small path to some strangely shaped stones, the origin of which is unknown. We follow the main path.
At 1.300 kilometres from the previous point, we begin the descent; we cross the road and the bridge over the river Villanueva. At kilometre 4.3 of the route, we reach the next crossroads, where we take a path to the left towards the village of Pacios, which we will reach after a few metres.
Once we reach the village of Pacios, kilometre 4.6, the route crosses an asphalt track and heads towards a beautiful oak forest that covers the whole valley: the carballeira de Pacios. At the next kilometre, we go down the track again until we reach Santa Eufemia, the starting and finishing point of our route. We are now at kilometre 6.3. From Santa Eufemia we return to the starting point, Vilanova/Villanueva de Oscos, along the path parallel to the AS-33 road.
