Since ancient times, the council of Mieres has been a meeting point, a place of passage, change and evolution. Already in the Middle Ages, its capital began to be called Mieres del Camín because of its connection with the pilgrimage to the Cathedral of San Salvador in Oviedo/Uviéu. Centuries later, its coal wealth will be the seed of the social revolution and knowledge that Mieres will lead up to the present day. A land of contrasting landscapes, mountains, valleys and rivers - mainly the Caudal -, it is an ideal place for hiking and cycle touring, so much so that it is a very active part of the Central Mountain Cycle Ring.
It is also a reference point for rural tourism in Asturias, with unique accommodation and establishments serving traditional Asturian cuisine, such as the Valle de Cuna and Cenera. And of course, it is also a key point for industrial tourism, with some of the facilities that have been put to good use, such as the mining village of Bustiello...
Mieres is the origin of an important number of illustrious personalities and has historically generated relevant social and cultural movements, in short, it is a territory prone to an endless number of cultural concerns... many of them discussed over a cider in the Plaza de Requejo or on the esplanade of the church of San Juan, patron saint of the festivities of the famous capital of this council.
