Info
With its gentle orography and soft mountains, dense forests and extensive plains, the Nora region is one of the great ecological and energetic larders of Asturias, and geographically it is its very heart. It is undoubtedly the green of the mountains and its land is rich in orchards, the apples are very good, the cattle and milk are of the highest quality... and all of this gives rise to a series of excellent manufactured gastronomic products.
The livestock market in Siero is still one of the most important in Europe; the region has a notable number of cider makers and is a great producer of quality cider; the cheese of Varé is first class and very marvellous; the sabadiego and the tripe of Noreña are delicacies that have their own festival and, in the case of the former, their own order of the Knights of the Order of the Sabadiego, etc.
The Nora is a friendly, open and festive region, whose celebrations are charismatic in all seasons of the year: in summer there is the medieval festival of the Exconxuraos, in Llanera, or the great pilgrimage of Asturias, which is the Carmín de la Pola. In autumn, lovers of cider and cider house life and of the traditional table and tablecloth, 'get their boots on' at the tripe festival in Noreña. Winter is the time of Comadres, those of Pola de Siero, and spring comes alive with sabadiego and picadillo in Noreña.
It is a region that combines work and celebration, or in other words, leisure and business, and has always done so, since the times when it was one of the industrial and mining engines of Asturias, because one of the energy 'arteries' of the region 'circulates' through its entrails, Siero still conserves large coal reserves, and its glorious mining past can be seen in the form of derricks and shafts that the traveller can enjoy on an unforgettable tourist route, where the mining routes of Jovellanos, who was linked to the region through the bloodline of his parents, are also well worth a visit.
Before the first industrial revolution, of which this area is the 'standard-bearer', there was a time when medieval manors ruled the world, and this world is reflected in the numerous palaces and emblazoned houses that the three municipalities still preserve today.
In addition to the immense plain that extends precisely in Llanera, fans of aerial sports have an infrastructure such as the aerodrome of La Morgal, and fans of the different modalities of the motor world will soon be able to fully enjoy the facilities of the 'Fernando Alonso' circuit, which bears the name of the two-time Formula 1 world champion from Asturias.
A region with a great atmosphere to enjoy the gastronomy, the drinks, the festivities, the sport, the landscape and the culture. All within easy reach of Oviedo, Gijón, Avilés and the Cuencas Mineras. In a green heart and well connected with the metropolitan area of Asturias.
Three councils make up this territory: Llanera, Noreña and Siero.
